For Chess Putnam, finding herself near-fatally poisoned by a con psychic and then stopping a murderous ghost is just another day on the job. As an agent of the Church of Real Truth, Chess must expose those looking to profit from the world’s unpleasant little poltergeist problem—humans filing false claims of hauntings—all while staving off any undead who really are looking for a kill. But Chess has been extra busy these days, coping with a new “celebrity” assignment while trying on her own time to help some desperate prostitutes.

Someone’s taking out the hookers of Downside in the most gruesome way, and Chess is sure the rumors that it’s the work of a ghost are way off base. But proving herself right means walking in the path of a maniac, not to mention standing between the two men in her life just as they—along with their ruthless employers—are moving closer to a catastrophic showdown. Someone is dealing in murder, sex, and the supernatural, and once again Chess finds herself right in the crossfire.

Since the City of Ghosts release day was two days ago, I sneaked into my cousin’s pc to re-write my Unholy Magic review since I lost it with my laptop…

Unholy Magic is the second book on the Downside Series. Miss Kane books just keep getting better and better. Chess’ life has been a rollercoaster since she was a kid—going through many horrible foster parents and now a junkie. And despite everything that is happening around her she keeps composure by her side and tries to help everyone, all the time whilst battling her own demons—her past—and her desire of being a better person.

Most than everything else, what boggles me the most is how “real” the characters feel. They are so rounded that it is easy to relate to each one of them in one way or another—it fascinates me! We do get to know more of Chess’ past and Terrible’s as well; we even learn more about Lex. Ms. Kane has an ability to create male characters and romantic situations without being mushy. We have Chess that makes mistakes over and over again, and owns up to her actions—then it is easy to understand her addiction and accept it because it helps her deal with her emotional baggage.

The story is easy to follow and even easier to read (all it took me was one sitting—an allnighter—and it was so VERY worth it.) Everything that happens flows nicely and at a pace that keeps the reader perked up and wanting to know what is going to happen next.

Once again Chess’ secret is threatened by Bump—Chess’ dealer—who wants her to find out what is it that is killing hookers at Downside. Chess gets torn up between her relationship and feelings for both Terrible and Lex… Add all of that and the Church business and *BAM* -grandness ensues in the most marvelous way. EPIC I tell you!!! Be ready to yell, shed tears and bite your nails all through the story.

Unholy Magic can read as a standalone, yet I advice to first read Unholy Ghosts because they do mention things that happened on the first book. Trust me, this book is freaking amazing! It is like crack for me—yes, I am a junkie now *grin,* and proud of it. Once again Ms. Kane exceeds the expectation with yummy greatness. LOVED IT! *Starts reading City of Ghosts right now.*

The world is not the way it was. The dead have risen, and the living are under attack. The powerful Church of Real Truth, in charge since the government fell, has sworn to reimburse citizens being harassed by the deceased. Enter Chess Putnam, a fully tattooed witch and freewheeling ghost hunter. She’s got a real talent for banishing the wicked dead. But Chess is keeping a dark secret: She owes a lot of money to a murderous drug lord named Bump, who wants immediate payback in the form of a dangerous job that involves black magic, human sacrifice, a nefarious demonic creature, and enough wicked energy to wipe out a city of souls. Toss in lust for a rival gang leader and a dangerous attraction to Bump’s ruthless enforcer, and Chess begins to wonder if the rush is really worth it. Hell, yeah.

Chess, a ghost debunker hired by the Church of Real Truth, must do what she can to figure out why ghosts are out of control these days; if she does not do so her dealer is threatening to expose a secret that might ruin her life. The following days are full drugs, threats, deaths, sexual release and a pinch of caring which will make the situation even more confusing and harder for her to get out of it.

Unholy Ghosts is the first book of the Downside Series by Stacia Kane. I admit that I had very high expectations on this one; which you would understand if you have read the Megan Chase Series by Ms. Kane as well. Let me just say that these book did not disappoint and exceeded those expectations. Once again I have fallen in love with Stacia Kane’s writing—and characters, of course.

First of all, the world-building was fantastic! I was amazed by how well crafted it was, and I want to read more of it (which makes the wait for book #2 quite excruciating.) Everyone there needs the church in order to survive and get the ghosts shipped to where they belong by the debunkers that work for it. I liked the magic and darkness of this world, how there are creatures lurking and living there as well. From the intricacy of this magical world to the language and characters that live on it, everything is fascinating.

The characters- what can I say about them? It is impressive how in 352 pages Ms. Kane was able to create very well defined characters! Granted, I would have liked to know a bit more about each of them; most of all Chess and her history with drugs—but hey, there are two more books coming out next month *thrilled.* I loved Terrible and how sweet he was in a twisted way. And about Lex… I liked him because he was different, sexy with a hint of tenderness that made him alluring to some extent; but I am sorry, I am still “Team Terrible.” I cannot wait to see how everything is going to finish between Chess and the two yummy men.

As twisted as this sounds, I loved the worms parts! It was a bit yucky I admit, but it made everything even more interesting—so much so that I stayed up until the wee hours of dawn just to finish it, even with it being finals wee. Though let me tell you something: it was SO worth it! So yeah… Make sure to get this book as soon as you can, you will not be able to put it down until you finish it. Yikes! I cannot wait for Unholy Magic. I am telling you, Stacia Kane’s stories are like freaking crack. 😉

Today [Author Appreciation Week, Day #2] I am talking about to lovely writers:

Erica Hayes and Stacia Kane

And [in no particular order] lets begin with->

Erica Hayes

I first saw the book one day I went to B&N to buy no particular books [just to look around and see what book would capture my attention.] I usually roam around Urban Fantasy/Fiction, and that was when I saw this sexy-ass cover that was mostly red and black [my fave colors.] I read the title Shadowfae [Interesting, right?] and then read the back cover and I had to get that book. Before reading it, I cheated and stalked Ms. Hayes website and read Hellcursed, and right away I had to read Shadowfae. Needless to say, I loved the book and started following her over Twitter. She is amazing and very, very funny! She is a lovely person, and from my perspective, she has this great relationship with her fans! Her writing is awesome as well, so get her books –Sexay and the characters [cough-Kane-cough] are yummeh! Her books are on my top faves ever since. Thank you Erica for sharing your stories and amazing universe and characters with us. ❤

Stacia Kane

Another lovely person, trust me! I literally stumbled across her site once because of one of her blog posts, and started following her on twitter [THIS was the post, LOL.] At first I really did not know she was an author, but when I started paying attention to her site, I got the point. I read her book, Personal Demons on February and I had to buy the rest of the series right away– One of my fave book series I must say! I loved the universe she created, I mean– It is one of my fave subjects to write and read about-> Demons! And the characters are amazing as well. I cried so much on the last book, not only because of everything that happens, but also because it was the last book; that fact alone broke my heart. But she is pretty cool, and also she is awesome to her fans. So, Ms. Kane, thank you so much for your stories, and for sharing them with us.

“Demon Possessed” by Stacia Kane

Psychologist and psychic Megan Chase has grown remarkably comfortable hanging out with demons. The demon “family” she leads is happy, her solo practice is stabilizing, and she and her steamy demon lover, Greyson Dante, are closer than ever. But when the couple books a week at a luxury hotel to attend a meeting of demon leaders, some unanticipated problems appear. An FBI agent with an unhealthy interest in less-than-legitimate demon business practices shows up; the demon community is urging Megan to undergo the rite that will make her a real demon; and a slightly shady minister is holding one of his wildly popular “weekend exorcisms” just down the road. And oh, yes, someone with scary magical abilities is attempting to kill her. Then, just when it seems as if things couldn’t possibly get any worse, a secret comes to light that could jeopardize Megan and Greyson’s future — if Megan manages to live that long. With things heating up, it’s becoming difficult for her to keep a cool head…

Megan is still adamant on completing the ritual that will make her a real demon, and now Greyson is sneakily pressuring her to do so. But when FBI agents start appearing at her office, things turn grimy once again. The summit of the Demon Houses is already here and all sorts of weird events are starting to happen. There is more emphasis in Megan and Greyson’s relationship, but something goes wrong and Megan discovers that her demon boyfriend is hiding something very important from her… Now personal problems and love problems are mixed up, and adding up are some exciting events and new creatures. Will this really be Megan Chase’s last book?

Demon Possessed was a total surprise. Very little of what happened in the book was actually predictable. Megan has grown up and is more independent, not relying on Greyson as much anymore. Greyson now demonstrates a weakness, something we had not seen before. The relationship between the two starts of even stronger, but something happens—What could it be? All of the sudden we are thrown off in the middle between them, biting our nails and praying for things to get fixed. Also we see more of our favorite characters: Malleus, Maleficarum, Spud, and Roc! Not to mention Tera, Nick, and Brian.

The book is fast paced with all types of turns—a new surprise with every turning page. We meet new creatures and explore more of that unique world of demons that Ms. Kane has created. As always, the action scenes were amazingly detailed and completely enthralling as the sexy ones.

I should come out and say that Demon Possessed made me cry like a wussy at some point, not to mention my screaming at some character, my cussing at others, or my random surprised gasps that made everyone who was around me go nuts. Someone had told me that the ending was fantastic, and I could not agree more, it was SPECTACULAR! I really could not tell what was going to happen at any point in this book, and it hurt when I had to stop reading in order to do some other stuff. It broke my heart when I read [somewhere I do not remember] that this was the last book in the series; I am going to miss Greyson! I think this couple is one of my favorite couples ever. Loved the book!

Demon Inside by Stacia Kane

Hanging out with demons can be Hell…

It’s been three months since psychologist Megan Chase made the stunning discovery that the world is filled with demons, and once more the situation is too hot to handle. Ironically, Megan — the only person in the world without a little personal demon sitting on her shoulder — has become the leader of a demon “family,” but now some unknown arcane power is offing her demons in a particularly unpleasant fashion. And while her demon lover Greyson Dante is still driving her wild with desire, he’s also acting strangely evasive. Then there’s the truth about Megan’s past — the truth she’s never known. Caught between personal problems and personal demons, Megan is having one hell of a hard time. Will the help of her Cockney guard demons and her witch friend Tera be enough so that Megan can finally resolve the past, survive the present, and face the future?

Megan is still struggling to get used to being the head of her own Meegra [Demon ‘family’] and also wishing for a normal life. When her Yezers [personal demons] start being attacked by something—they desert Megan and go to some other Gretneg [head of the demon family.] Meanwhile, the ones remaining claim that they want a severe master. Something inside Megan begins to change. Greyson, her demon lover is not being completely honest as to what is it that is attacking the demons, and she finds out that there are other demons houses being threatened. Megan’s past comes back to haunt her and all hell breaks lose, but she gets the closure she wanted and also gets to understand what happened that made her what she is.

There is just so much to say about Demon Inside that it is impossible to keep it short, but I will try my best, promise. I read this book at work and in class as well. The build up is brilliant and the character development is amazing. It is fast paced and it does not drag or confuse the reader at any moment.

In this book we get to know more of Megan—her past; what happened once that is the reason as to why she is what and how she is. She is stronger now and keeps growing more and more into the pages. Also, we meet her family and other exciting new characters. And Greyson Dante is not behind; we get to enjoy his presence and sexiness. The bond between him and Meg even stronger now and still filled with the sexual tension, if not more of it.

Ms. Kane lets us into the demon world more openly now, with one of the most amazing scenes ever, a service for one of the demons and also a very important ritual soon afterward. The description was detailed yet not overwhelming. It flows smoothly, leaving place for the imagination, but giving us the most important details. The action is constant and the depiction of these scenes is so thorough and well done that leaves the reader breathless. Not too mention the oh-so-steamy and hot sex scenes.

I really did not think that it could get better than Personal Demons, but if this one was good—Demon Inside is certainly excellent. Our three demon bodyguards are still my favorites along with Roc, Megan’s Yezer assistant. I am now reading Demon Possessed and cannot wait to see what is going to happen.

Personal Demons

Personal Demons by Stacia Kane

• Paperback: 304 pages
• Publisher: Juno Books (May 1, 2008)
• ISBN-10: 0809572559
• ISBN-13: 978-0809572557

Megan promises listeners to her new radio call-in show that she’ll “slay their personal demons,” and they believe her. So do the personal demons.  Although she doesn’t know it, Megan is the only human without a demon on her shoulder. This, coupled with her psychic abilities, makes her a valuable weapon for any demon “family” that can gain her allegiance. It also makes her a serious threat – not just the personal demons, but to a soul-sucker known as the Accuser who has an old score to settle.

Megan and her allies – a demon lover who both protects and seduces her with devilish intensity, a witch with poor social skills, and three cockney guard demons – have to deal not only with the personal demons, but a soul-sucker, ghosts of Megan’s past, and a reporter who threatens to destroy Megan’s career!

Megan is a psychologist that hosts a radio show where everyone calls in for advice. She is expected, by her boss, to always use the tag line “How can I slay your personal demons?” which she hates. Also, she is a psychic. What she discovers soon after is that there are indeed personal demons and they believe she is out there to get them; now they are after her. These personal demons sit on people’s shoulders, urging them to do something wrong in order to gain control over humans. In this book we have different demons, zombies, and even a reporter named Brian and a sexy hottie-hot-hottie, oh-so-flirty and tempting demon –Dante, who assigns her three demon bodyguards.

I first heard of this book by a friend of mine who knows I love to read things that have to do with demons, and Kane’s depiction of them is quite fascinating. It was hard to put that book down, especially when you have homework waiting for you, but word of advice: it is not a book you can read on the commute, sexy times*wink wink.* Put that on a bowl and blend with wit and snarkiness: Yumm!! Tasty delight.

Kane’s character development is great, you get them, and it is not confusing. The main character, Megan, is an A+ heroine. She fights ‘em all, and she is a girl at the same time. She does not let herself become a play toy for anyone, and is fairly stubborn [which is a plus, always.] Dante, the demon that is helping her is one hell of a drool worthy fire demon [hot much?] and the sexy scenes… Well, let’s just say that sexy might be an understatement. The demon bodyguards? They were the best characters [right after Dante, of course.] I am not going to talk much about them, but just say that every scenethat they are in is enjoyable.

The story flowed nicely, and the plot gave a lot of unexpected turns. The action scenes were amazing. It felt like watching a movie in my head while reading it. Not an overload of details, but a good balance. It was nice to read, and kept me up all night because I had to finish it. Right after I finished I ordered book #2 [which still hasn’t come yet –ahem ahem] and I cannot wait to read it.
